Red Cross Fashion Extravaganza featured segment – ‘Always a Bridesmaid’

The BVI Red Cross will be hosting its 2^nd annual fashion extravaganza, ‘For the Love of Weddings’ on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall starting at 7:00pm.

This week, we are featuring the ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ segment of the fashion show which was inspired by the movie “27 Dresses” starring Katherine Heigl. “27 Dresses” shows how one woman, Jane Nichols, dedicated her life to other people’s weddings, rather than on securing a love life of her own. She was a bridesmaid in 27 weddings and kept all the dresses in her closet in remembrance of those fine occasions. The dresses ranged from the typical David’s Bridal bridesmaid dresses to the ‘punk rock’ outfit and the ‘Southern Belle’ ensemble. Jane’s love of weddings and devotion to everyone came to an end when her baby sister fell in love with Jane’s boss – who Jane had an enormous crush on. After a few arguments and tirades, in the end, in true Hollywood fashion, Jane got her own dream wedding and had all 27 friends wear the ugly bridesmaid dresses that she had worn on their behalf.

That story line may be familiar to some of us as we may have two, three, four or more bridesmaid dresses in our closets. It is an honor to be asked to stand with a bride or groom at what is presumed to be the biggest event in his or her life. Who can say ‘No’ to a sibling, cousin, best friend or college roommate when asked to stand in on such an occasion. For this ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ segment, we can look forward to an array of dresses, many from Red Cross donations and volunteers’ private collections.

This week, we would also like to highlight the Church Boyz, who will be performing at ‘For the Love of Weddings’. They were recently awarded the Best Dressed Group at the ZROD Top 7 @ 7 Award Show. A gospel and hip hop group, these four young performers entertained the audience last year at Red Cross’ ‘Back Then to Now’ fashion show and are looking forward to ‘spreading the love’ this year.
